Synopsis

Sustainability is a key aspect in the coatings sector. The valorisation of biomass emerges as an interesting option and, consequently, the obtention of new materials from it. For this reason, AIMPLAS is developing new biobased additives for the formulation of sustainable functional coatings.
An example is the development of chitosan and phytic acid polyelectrolytes, obtaining a biobased material that functions as a flame-retardant filler, with application in the formulation of fireproof paints. Additionally, chitosan has antimicrobial activity, thus being able to achieve multiple functionalities with this same filler.
Another example is the development of polyterpenes, obtained from the polymerization of terpenes and terpenoids, and applied as UV protection additives. Additionally, reactive extrusion (REX) technology is used in the synthesis, which requires a minimum quantity of solvents.
To validate these functionalities, it is necessary to characterize them, with AIMPLAS having the equipment and experience to carry out fire resistance, bacterial growth, or UV aging tests, among others.
In summary, biobased functional additives open a wide range of possibilities in sectors such as packaging, construction, transportation or medical, among others, where functional and sustainable coatings are required.
