High performance, easy incorporation matting agents
Nowadays, demands in terms of appearance and coating performance are becoming ever more stringent. With transparent coatings and varnishes, the current trend is to produce finishes with a natural appearance, entailing very low gloss values. One general issue associated with high matt finishes involves poor mechanical and chemical properties compared to gloss finishes. The main reason is the matting agent typically used: silicas.
Moreover, in UV-finish, 100%-solid or high-solid formulations, large volumes of silica need to be incorporated to achieve high matt products with the desired gloss level. This causes increased system viscosity, particularly in the area of low shear stress, triggering a thixotropic flow that is detrimental to application properties such as levelling, flow and air release.
Another current trend in high demand from customers is haptics. At times, depending on the type of substrate, silkier, more velvety and rubbery non-slip textures are required. On other occasions, more specific haptic properties are required, such as a paper or sandy texture, etc. To this end, there are several products available on the market, most of them polymeric.
This presentation focuses on a family of matting agents and surface property modifying agents, their contribution to the development of varnishes, paints and coatings with low gloss values –without affecting the mechanical and/or chemical properties of the film– and to the development of coatings with different haptics.
