The presentation will be focused to introduce the general ideas to understand the ATEX Directive, that is, the presence of EXplosive ATmospheres in facilities and the risk of explosion, in force since July 2003 and is included in article 6 of the Occupational Risk Prevention Law (in Spain). It is applied to the all the painting industry and similar ones in which there are flammable products such as the many solvents and resins used in painting, and combustible dust (explosive) such as many pigments, metallic powders, etc. and that can generate an explosion. The ATEX equipment and its ATEX Document, in addition to the products, must include all storage facilities, processing such as reactors and mixers, transport, energy, electrical, mechanical…etc.
