Synopsis

The accumulation of ice is a problem for fuel consumption in aeronautical transport or the efficiency of electricity generation in wind turbines. There are coatings that, despite not being able to prevent the formation of ice completely, can reduce the adhesion of ice, and thus help its detachment due to vibrations, wind or mechanical actions. There are methods for the quantification of adhesion based on the shear or traction of the ice formed by applying liquid water and freezing it. These methods have poor reproducibility and the ice formed does not reproduce the natural formation of ice, which is formed by the deposition of droplets with diameters in the range of tens of micrometers. The test developed in Aimplas mimics the formation of ice in nature and the detachment is quantified by means of centrifugal forces such as those observed in wind turbines.
